Compton
Compton is a vibrant and diverse city located in the southern part of Los Angeles County. The city is one of the oldest in L.A. County. It was the eighth city to incorporate in May of 1888. The city is considered to be part of the South side of the county by residents of Los Angeles. According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 96,637. Compton is known as a hub city in the county due to its central location in the Los Angeles area. The neighborhoods that make up Compton include: Leland, Richland Farms, Sunny Cove and Downtown Compton. Although Compton is still mostly thought of as a majority African-American community, Hispanics/Latinos are actually the largest ethnic group in the city. A possible explanation for this incorrect belief is that despite the shift in the population of Compton recently, many prominent African-American pro-athletes and rappers, such as UCLA/NBA star Baron Davis and late NWA star Eazy-E, are from Compton. Also, local politics continues to be dominated by the African-American community, which holds most of the city’s elected positions. While still considered an inner suburb of Los Angeles, Compton has seen its population of middle-class residents increase over the last few years. This is due to the city’s affordable housing and a reduction in local crime rates. With an influx of immigrants into the city and the shift in ethnic population, after the 2000 U.S. Census Latinos were officially recognized as the majority ethnic group within the city. Compton has been mentioned many times in connection with gang affiliations, in gangster rap and “g-funk” songs, especially in the late 80s and early 90s when g-funk music was at its height. Due to this attention, Compton has attained an association not only with rap music, but with gang violence and crime as well. Compton has recently turned into a younger community, with a median age of people in Compton at 25 the time of the 2010 U.S. census survey; at the time, the average age in the United States was 35. Episodes of the famous 90s TV sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” were filmed in Compton because main character Will Smith's friend on the show DJ Jazzy Jeff lived there.
